Here is the color of the current Russian rock music, positive and humane.
The idea of opening of the first musical club with rock-n-roll design and live music in Moscow belonged to Stas Namin. He invited his friends - musicians Andrey Makarevich and Valeriy Meladze to take part in this project. And in May 1998 these three opened the first in the country music club-restaurant «Rhythm and Blues Cafe». The artists of the Art Studio of the Stas Namins Center coated facade of the house with a huge fresco-collage with portraits of 40 Russian and world stars of rock music. (Many of them are the Rolling Stones, Ringo Starr, Brian May, Status Quo, Depeche Mode, Chick Corea, Jean-Luc Ponty, Rick Wakeman, visiting the “Rhythm and Blues Cafe”, they left on the facade their autographs.)
For the last years the pictures with no less unique autographs decorated the interior of the club, whose point of interest became a bar on the second floor, made inside the old pink limousine (Tarantino by himself gave Namin this idea), and also the tree of the development of the national rock music adorned the wall of the first floor with pictures of all existing and country-rock bands.
At the opening of the club in 98 there were such bands as «Flowers» and «the Time Machine», Aleksandr Gradskiy, Boris Grebenschikov, Konstantin Nikolsky, Vladimir Matetsky, Alexey Kozlov... Special guests then became Eric Robin Bell - guitarist of the band Thin Lizzy, bass-guitarist Jimi Hendrix Experience, English musician Noel Redding. The finale of the opening of the “Rhythm and Blues Cafe” was universal joyful jam of course.
20 November legendary musicians should come to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the “Rhythm and Blues Cafe”. The magnificent red carpet, spread on the pavement of the courtyard in Starovagankovskoe, passed Stas Namin – band «Flowers», Evgeny Margulis – «Time Machine», Pyotr Podgorodetskiy, Gia Dzagnidze, Alexander Sikorski, Konstantin Nikolsky, Grigory Ordzhonikidze, Denis Mazhukov, Dmitry Maloletov, Dmitry Chetvergov, Levan Lomidze with a group of Blues Cousins, composer Vladimir Matetsky and actress Elena Kondulainen.
Neither the founders Andrei Makarevich and Valery Meladze, nor the Grand Maestro Alexander Gradskiy, or great BG were not seen there. I remember three years ago when this club hosted an informal meeting of President Dmitry Medvedev and the Russian rock musicians, BG and Makarevich certainly had been there... One of the first who congratulated on them was an energetic Deputy, perhaps even of the State Duma. Is she a special guest?
The undoubted success of the jubilee concert can be attributed to the presenter – well known guitarist, vocalist and the author of different songs Sergei Voronov. The stated dress code in the evening was a Country style (as well as the dress style of the beginning of the 70s). The presenter thought also of the hippie generation, “...who proved to be that good, which lacked the bourgeois society. The hippies gave the world bright people. We didnt give a damn on any barriers and therefore we indulged in music. Stas not in vain called his band “Flowers”. Drink to Stas because he deserved it!”
The concert opened with the composition “Yesterday” in the interpretation of guitarist Dmitry Maloletov, the owner of the unique playing technique on the guitar called “double tiered independent tapping”. God knows what did it mean, but the music was really unusual and exciting. Alik Sikorski sang brilliantly two unforgettable hits: a classic example of rock-n-roll “Hold on! Im coming!” and “Blues Suede Shoes”, which caused a greatly positive reaction of the audience. The same we can say about the next guitarist and singer Gia Dzagnidze, whose style is a vigorous manner of performance, combined with a sophisticated understanding of the nuances of the Blues.
There was also the band «Flowers» (with keyboarder Peter Podgoroditsky and other joined musicians). First of all they didnt realize what to sing, but said to the audience immediately: «Before we start playing something, I want to say: who will not sing with us “Cheer up!”, the next year will have no money».
We had to sing. New time is new monkey.
